With a good understanding of what makes up a balanced diet, one gets the necessary nutrition the body needs to be healthy. However, if your diet is not planned properly, you could miss out on the most essential nutrients. A vegetarian diet can be very healthy, but there remains a strong need to make sure of getting enough nutritional requirements. Women and older people are thought to be at a particular risk, including those on a vegetarian diet. Vitamin B12, for instance, is only found naturally in foods from animal sources, so sources for vegans are limited. The Vegetarian Society suggests on increasing vitamin B12 intake with 10 micrograms per day of a proprietary supplement.
