1 in 5 Americans use herbal, non-vitamin supplements

In 2012, non-vitamin, non-mineral dietary supplements were the most common complementary health approaches used by U.S. adults. According to National Health Interview Survey by the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC’s) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the use of non-vitamin supplements (17.9 percent) was more than twice that of all other complementary health approaches. The highest was in the Mountain, Pacific, and West North Central regions. Previous research also demonstrated that regional differences exist among adults in the United States, and this report reveals that those regional differences persist across a wide range of complementary health approaches.
