Nitrates show metabolic benefits: RCT data
A new study says, boosting intakes of nitrates may improve the resting metabolic rate in healthy volunteers. This source comes from the consumption of nitrate-enriched vegetables. In this study, the dose of nitrate used was the equivalent to that consumed in 200 to 300 grams spinach and 2-3 beetroot. On the basis of the established protective effects of green leafy vegetables against major diseases, it speculates that lowering metabolic rate by nitrate in vegetables represent an evolutionary favorable metabolic response to preserve energy. It’s been proposed that these health effects may be due, in part, to vegetables’ high nitrate content. Nitrate is especially abundant in beetroot and leafy greens.
