Black Chokeberries Are Returning to North America
Aronia, also called black chokeberry is a kind of berry packed with essential phyto-nutrients, vitamins and flavonoids, and anthocyanin class of antioxidants. Throughout the world, black chokeberry is consumed in products such as preserves, cereal bars, juices, gummies, and liqeurs. This market has caused renewed interest in aronia as a food and nutraceutical crop with records from the USDA National Organic Program showing as many as 40 domestic and certified organic producers listed in 2012. Gayle Engels and Josef Brickmann, in the latest edition of HerbalGram, authored a members-only review detailing the cultural and agricultural history of the black chokeberry along with potential human health benefits.
