Is Chia the New Quinoa?
The resurgence of ancient grains reflects the return of traditional and natural grain products to consumer diets. Like quinoa, chia originated from South America as a highly-prized source of nutrition. Though lesser-known than quinoa, chia is well positioned to lead the world’s healthiest foods; providing antioxidants, protein, fiber, minerals, more calcium and more omega 3-fatty acids. Chia has taken toll on bakery products, supplements and sports nutrition lines, with breakfast cereals and bars accounted for over one-fifth of total launches. Quinoa is still driving category growth, but chia has turned itself the modern-day powerhouse showing even higher rates of growth.
