Daily multivitamin supplement may decrease cataract risk in men

Researchers analyzed the impact of daily multivitamin supplements on new cases of vision-impairing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), or clouding of the eye’s lens. Long-term daily multivitamin supplement use was noted with the capacity to decrease cataract risk in men by 9%. The risk was even lower at 13%. Experts advice that if multivitamins really decrease the risk of cataract in men, even by a modest 10%, this rather small reduction would nonetheless have a large public health impact. Although there were contradictory reports on the results of other studies, such as age-related eye disease study (AREDS), it must be noted that the studies have different nutrient supplements, dosing and objectives.
