Increased wholegrain and fish intake could boost good cholesterol levels

Consumption of diet rich in wholegrain and especially fatty fish can help to raise levels of “good” HDL-cholesterol, according to data. Intake of fish has long been known beneficial for health. The new data provides valuable information on how the consumption of fish affects the size and lipid concentrations of lipoproteins which transport lipids in the blood. The positive changes were observed on persons who increased their intake of fish most, noting that state-of-the-art metabolomics were used to enable a very detailed analysis in lipoprotein particles. The research, lead by Maria Lankinen from the University of Eastern Finland,  also noted significance of large HDL particles in reducing risk of atherosclerosis.
